You are constantly folding/unfolding panels to access stuff, coupled with the complete INABILITY to easily scroll open modules into view ( without inadvertently adjusting a parameter you didn’t want to). Unless you have large size monitors at high resolution, you just very, very quickly give up and stop fighting the crippled navigation there. There’s perhaps something else more mundane that stops people using the Rack, in the MixConsole certainly.

Let’s face it, the Rack tools are tiny and just don’t “pop” visually like a well designed and fully featured 3rd party plug-in that you paid extra for. I think we just got used to the paradigm early on, and when the Rack was introduced, most of us looked at it and passed…which brings me to the second reason: beyond the EQ (and of late, the Compressor), there isn’t anywhere near as much “theatre” provided by the Rack inventory. Prior to the introduction of the Rack, Steinberg provided those kinds of plug-ins to be used as Inserts…and still do. One, is that we are used to going to and using the Insert location to provide all the tools we’ve ever needed. I think there are two reasons why the Rack is ignored by most long time users. Because it preceded the Rack, it’s been designed into the GUI to be almost as accessible as an EQ on a typical hardware mixer…and as a result, it typically gets used more often than the rest of the dynamically oriented Rack tools. The EQ has been treated a little differently. Nothing fancy and nothing outstanding, but still quite usable. For a user new to sequencing, it provides a good built-in collection of commonly used audio tools out of the box. It is basically another set of inserts that sit in a different location. Here’s my take on the Channel Strip Rack.
